You can sue the landlord IF you end up losing money (security deposit or similar) during the situation. It’s none of YOUR business whether or not he pays for his mortgages. You got to live there since January, and you owe him for each month you did live there.

No…landlord was not violating any statutes. What happens between the landlord and his bank is basically none of your business nor is what he does with your rental payments.
Suing the Landlord will probably not get you too far. The court would probably rule that you did receive gain/enjoyment for the money you gave for rent. Afterall, you did have a roof over your head and you did not mention any damages incurred by you caused by the landlord’s failure to pay his mortgage.
Chances are your landlord was caught up in the same Mortgage Crisis that we have all found ourselves in, BUT he may have also been doing something illegal. He may have been doing what is know as Equity Skimming which is illegal in most states.
If you believe you have a real legitimate gripe call your State’s Attorneys’ General Office.
